Position Purpose

Reporting to the Manager, Infectious Diseases, the Registered Nurse works autonomously to prevent illness, promote and protect health through meeting a wide range of complex client needs within the parameters outlined in the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care “Mandatory Programs and Services Guidelines” and other relevant legislation.

Major Responsibilities

•Demonstrates knowledge, expertise and competency in performing nursing procedures such as interdermal, subcutaneous, and intermuscular injections and venipuncture.
•Interprets and assesses post-injection reactions, and applies analytical decision-making approaches by following established nursing standards, procedures and practices.
•Plans, schedules and provides an annual inspection of the storage of publicly-funded vaccines in community sites such as physician offices, hospitals and Long Term Care facilities. Ensures that the vaccine storage and handling practices meet the standards outlined by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, and provides accurate and complete documentation of the key findings of these inspections.
•Acts as an advocate for health and well-being of individuals, families and groups in the community by planning and participating in health teaching and counselling regarding immunization, sexual health and communicable disease issues and international travel by employing a variety of communication strategies including written and computerized resources.
•Uses a network of internal and external consumers, colleagues and organizations to assist in activities that enhance program effectiveness. Researches various sources, including the Internet and medical journals to obtain current information regarding vaccines, diseases, illnesses and health practices relevant to the division’s programs.
•Responds to enquiries from health professionals, day care and school personnel, parents and individuals targeted by division programs by telephone, in person or through written correspondence.
•Maintains essential records, reports and statistics, and provides accurate and complete documentation of all information in accordance with professionals standards, and established guidelines and procedures within the division in order to ensure the continuity of care, accountability and evaluation of program effectiveness.
•Demonstrates accountability for professional nursing practice in accordance with the College of Nurses Standards of Practice, the Regulated Health Professions Act and other relevant legislation.
•Participates in professional development activities, acquiring new skills as required, reading current nursing and public health literature, and applying research findings in practice.

Qualifications

•Graduation from an approved program or school for Registered Nurses and a current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
•Valid CPR certification.
•Valid Ontario Class "G" driver’s license and a private vehicle for use on corporate business.
•Knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards.
•Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.
•One year’s experience in a community health care delivery setting.
•Computer literacy and the ability to work with computerized data base system.
•Ability to relate to clients of all ages, backgrounds, gender and sexual orientations and with varying levels of education and abilities.
•Ability to make independent decisions within the scope of the Standards of Nursing Practice.
•Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer focus, communication, collaboration and personal ownership.
