POSITION OVERVIEW:

Contract Duration: Approximately 9-10 months (until January 2021)

Under the general guidance and direction of the Head Gardener, Black Creek Pioneer Village (BCPV), the Gardener is responsible for supporting the preservation and management of the heritage landscape and gardens on the Village’s approximately 33-acre property. Key responsibilities of the role include: supporting the creation and maintainenance of 19th century-inspired gardens and landscapes, completing landscape management tasks, horticultural maintenance and providing support as needed for special events and programs.

NOTE: Hiring at TRCA is contingent on the clearance of the Vulnerable Sector Screening. Candidates will be asked for a screening only where they have been selected as the leading candidate.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in preserving and maintaining BCPV’s living collection of 10 heritage gardens, numerous natural green spaces and 5-10 heritage and modern landscapes contained within the approximately 33-acre property.
  • Implement Landscape Management Plans, under the direction of the Head Gardener.
  • Monitor and maintain the gardens and landscapes for overall health, beauty, accessibility and historic authenticity.    
  • Apply knowledge of horticulture to assist with planning heritage gardens and landscapes for the enjoyment of all audiences who visit BCPV.
  • Receive, investigate and prioritize the resolution of inquiries, emergencies, and/or service requests.
  • Maintain and update records in computerized maintenance management systems to ensure standards and best practices are maintained.
  • Maintain horticultural display gardens, vegetable gardens, landscape gardens and natural areas.
  • Coordinate and monitor BCPV’s propagation operations and horticultural management program, including assisting with floriculture, plant propagation and plant protection.
  • Implement an Integrated Pest Management Program with emphasis on organic best practices. Inspect gardens routinely and monitor for signs of insects and damage.
  • Implement a plant Health Care Plan, monitoring gardens and landscapes for signs of disease or stress.
  • Assist with planning a vegetable sale for BCPV’s Pioneer Harvest Festival. Coordinate all preparation of activities, such as harvesting large quantities of vegetables.
  • Motivate and mentor volunteers in several areas of knowledge, including horticulture expertise, skills development, garden program delivery, and health and safety practices.
  • Source and support the procurement of all materials, supplies and equipment within budgetary allowance and Corporate Purchasing policies.
  • Manage inventory including horticultural supplies and plant materials harvested for program purposes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 year College Diploma in Horticulture or related discipline.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a horticultural operation work environment.
  • Valid Ontario ‘G’ Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Ontario Pesticide Exterminator Land License (Landscape) an asset.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Pesticides Act.
  • Knowledge of the Invasive Species Act an asset.
  • Knowledge of the operation of specialized parks equipment and parks maintenance vehicles.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, maps and infrastructure drawings.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong prioritization, planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively across several departments.
  • Willingness to work a varied schedule, including weekends and evenings when required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Black Creek Pioneer Village’s values, programs, audience and institutional priorities.
  • Computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), GPS, and maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of 19th century agricultural practices an asset.
