On Aug. 1, 2017, Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital integrated to become Unity Health Toronto, a single health network advancing the health of our patients, clients and residents, and our urban communities. About our sites
Providence Healthcare provides rehabilitation, palliative care, long-term care and community programs in Toronto. Through Providence Hospital’s inpatient and outpatient programs, adults of all ages rehabilitate after strokes, orthopaedic surgery, lower limb amputations or other complex medical conditions generally associated with aging. The hospital’s palliative care program offers seven days a week patient admissions for people approaching the end of life. Short-term respite admissions are available for palliative patients who require inpatient care before returning home to spend their final days. The Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence long-term care home provides the highest standards of comfort, care and safety to 288 residents. An Adult Day Program for people with moderate to severe dementia cares for the most vulnerable clients around the clock.
St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a community teaching health centre affiliated with the University of Toronto that has served the communities of west Toronto and beyond for nearly a century. It is a vital resource for people and families at every stage in their lives, including family birthing, specialized paediatric services, family medicine and dedicated programs for the growing senior population. Its teams also help to diagnose and manage chronic illnesses at its ambulatory clinics. St. Joseph’s areas of specialty include mental health, cardiology, diabetes and nephrology, with St. Joseph’s also being home to tertiary care programs in bariatrics, thoracic surgery and hepatobiliary surgery. These programs support not only our local community, but are a valued resource at a regional and provincial level.
St. Michael’s Hospital is a fully affiliated University of Toronto teaching and research-intensive hospital, and is a hub for care, ranging from primary and secondary care to highly complex tertiary and quaternary care for patients from across the province. St. Michael’s is downtown Toronto’s adult trauma centre – an urban focal point for neurosurgery, complex cardiac and cardiovascular care, diabetes and osteoporosis care, minimally invasive surgery, and care of those who experience disadvantage. It is also one of the province’s major sites of care for critically ill patients and runs provincial programs in the treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis – the largest of such clinics in Canada.
St. Michael’s is currently undergoing a major redevelopment project that will help position the site to become Canada’s premier critical care hospital. The project includes a new 17-storey patient care tower at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets, a renovated Emergency Department and significant upgrades to improve the existing hospital space.
Unity Health Toronto is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised largely of members from the legacy boards of each of the three sites as well as ex-officio members. It is supported by a single executive team.
Unity Health Toronto has a network-wide Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), with two separate MAC site subcommittees; one for St. Joseph’s, and one for St. Michael’s and Providence. This reflects the structure of medical departments and divisions at the network; St. Joseph’s Health Centre has separate structure of medical departments and divisions from those at St. Michael’s and Providence.
Vice President, Clinical Programs, Providence Healthcare
Reporting to the President and CEO of Unity Health Toronto, the Vice President, Clinical Programs, Providence Healthcare (PHC) is a member of the network executive team, contributing to the development and execution of the strategic directions of the network, as well as providing oversight of the operational effectiveness, financial stability and general efficiency of Unity Health Toronto. The Vice President has leadership and operational responsibilities for a portfolio of clinical programs focused at the Providence site including a 245 bed rehabilitation, complex care and palliative care hospital with inpatient and ambulatory programs, a 288 bed long term care home and an active community support service for cognitively impaired adults, along with some network programs spanning multiple sites. A close partnership with the Director of Medical Affairs at PHC, and the CNO and Professional Practice Leader for Unity Health will be essential in overseeing clinical care at PHC.
The Vice President plays a key role in supporting and advancing Unity Health Toronto’s unique values-based culture by demonstrating principled leadership, embedding patient centred care and ensuring that service delivery within the clinical programs are aligned with the network’s mission, vision, values, and strategy. This role requires an authentic leader with superior relationship management skills to collaborate with stakeholders across Unity Health Toronto and in the broader health system, and to develop strong, high-performing teams. The Vice President will provide outstanding leadership in achieving our goal - ensuring the best possible patient experience across the network and working with the community partners to better integrate services.
An optimistic and enthusiastic leader, the successful candidate will possess thorough understanding of, and appreciation for, the complexities and stakeholder dynamics of long term care, rehabilitation, community services and academic health centres, which integrate patient care with teaching and research. The successful candidate will have progressive experience in leadership of clinical programs in a complex health care environment, a post-graduate degree in nursing or other healthcare discipline, health policy or business/health/public administration and demonstrated success with co-design, coaching and mentoring methodologies.

Key Job Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning
•As a member of Unity Health Toronto’s executive leadership team, contributes to the development and execution of Unity Health Toronto’s overall strategic and operating plans
•Leads the development and execution of plans for the growth, management, and performance of specific assigned clinical programs in collaboration with relevant site leads
•Champions and contributes to the network’s patient and resident care quality and patient safety agenda, in collaboration with other medical and operational leaders
•Advances external partnerships to enhance Unity Health Toronto’s impact, performance and reputation as a key partner in system-wide service planning and delivery, with a focus on our local communities
Clinical Program and Site Leadership
•Provides executive and operational leadership of the services at Providence Healthcare, ensuring patient focused transitions of care between all care environments
•In partnership with the Chief and Director of Medical Affairs at PHC and the CNO and Professional Practice Leaders, drives excellence in clinical care at PHC
•Ensures that network plans, priorities and initiatives are supported, implemented and sustained within the programs for which he/she is accountable
•Is accountable for the leadership, performance and operations of identified clinical programs at Unity Health Toronto
•Contributes to an environment that fosters clinical excellence, quality improvement and person-centred care
•Promotes a culture of innovation, change and accountability within the management team of the programs for which he/she is accountable
•Contributes to the identification and realization of site specific and network-wide improvement opportunities

•Works with the members of the Executive Committee to establish priorities for resource allocation, including recommendations for investments in capital equipment, renovations and future site development

The role of Vice President Clinical Programs requires an experienced health care leader who will be committed to and guided by Unity Health Toronto’s mission and values. The ideal candidate also has exceptional interpersonal and operational skills, and extensive experience inspiring teams, driving change, innovation and excellence in clinical, operational, and professional practice environments.
