The Sheridan Peer Mentor Program hires students to support, coach and mentor fellow students in a variety of departments across the college. Being a Peer Mentor is an enriching experience. The skills and experiences achieved from this job prepares students for future jobs. Also, you will be able to build a network of lifetime friends and future colleagues. Open to FULL TIME Sheridan students RETURNING for the 2019/20 Academic Year
As a student leader, duties include:
- Acting as a resource to students, on behalf of Student Affairs, by: providing general information; making referrals to appropriate services; directional support and answering questions
- Supporting New Student Orientation
- Promotion and advertising (in-person, poster or display creation)
- Planning and participating in special events and outreach activities
- Connecting with students one-on-one to provide additional assistance or resources
- Providing input to departmental activities or programming
- Collaboration with Mentors from other departments to support college wide events/programs
- Assist students in their transition to life at Sheridan and facilitate students getting involved on campus
- Attend regular team meetings
- Attend professional development, workshops and social events
- Document and report statistics
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Full-Time student returning for the 2019/20 school year
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Responsible, well organized and dependable
- Interest in helping other students
- Proficiency in basic computer programs
- Experience in customer service is an asset
- Must be available to attend mandatory training and new student orientation
- Students must select no more than 3 departments of interest
- Students are hired to work within 1 department

Peer Mentors assist Accessible Learning Services in promoting our services to the Sheridan community. Peer Mentors are involved in outreach presentations, special event planning, and one-on-one as well as small group work with registered students. Peer Mentors facilitate both social and academic success for all students with disabilities by assisting them as they transition to College and throughout their journey at Sheridan.
Note: Advisement Peer Mentors work full time (35hours/week) through July – August assisting with students transitioning to college.
Student Advisement Peer Mentors assist first year students with their academic and social transition to college by providing consistent, timely and accurate information in an enthusiastic manner. Peer Mentors make personal connections with students by phone, email and in person through the First Year Connections (FYC) program. The First Year Connections program starts with a summer campaign to new students and continues throughout the academic year, with various duties within Student Advisement including presentations, outreach, and events.
Peer Mentors in the Athletics department share the responsibility of the daily operations and on-site promotions of varsity and athletic programs. This includes organizing and aiding in the operation of Campus Recreation and Varsity tournaments and Sheridan intramural and extramural league sports.
Peer Mentors promote Career Education services and special events to the students within a specific academic school. By developing interactive approaches to reaching fellow students, and delivering strong presentations in classes, the Peer Mentors increase the Centre’s visibility resulting in higher usage of the Centre. Peer Mentors also provide basic information on the Career Education web site, jobs.sheridancollege.ca, and refer students to the professionals in the Career Centre. Peer Mentors perform resume critiques, mock interviews, demonstrate/ showcase Optimal Resume, and coach students on job search strategies such as networking and LinkedIn.
Health and Wellness
Health and Wellness Peer Mentors help to promote Health, Counseling, and Wellness resources to students across campus, in part by participating in the delivery of outreach activities and events for students. They encourage timely and effective use of all Student Affairs resources for academic, personal, and social development leading to student success. They build community by fostering inclusive interactions and educational collaborations across programs and services.
The International Centre Peer Mentor will assist international students with their transition to a new country, society, institution and educational system, and provide international students (especially first year) with the opportunity to meet other students within Sheridan. The International Centre Mentor will also increase his or her own cultural awareness and develop/enhance his or her leadership, organizational, teamwork and inter-cultural communication skills.
Library and Learning Services
Library Peer Mentors assist students in the use of the Library and its resources. They may conduct information/orientation sessions, create displays, and assist in the organization of special events.
Student Leadership and Engagement
Student Leadership and Engagement Peer Mentors assist first year and upper year students in understanding how they can get involved on campus by educating those students about CCR activities, clubs & associations and volunteering. This is accomplished by liaising with current students through one on one/peer to peer meetings, identifying, planning and implementing outreach activities and completing a range of tasks.
Child and Youth Care / Social Service Worker
Note: Students must be enrolled in either the Child/Youth Worker or Social Service Worker program to apply.
Students who are selected as Child and Youth Worker/ Social Service Worker Peer Mentors will have demonstrated a high level of student leadership and academic achievement within the program and can serve as effective role models for first year students enrolled in the program. Peer Mentors will show a strong commitment to helping new students make the transition to Sheridan along with being part of a team of Peer Mentors at Sheridan. Accordingly all Peer Mentors will require high motivation, strong communication skills, and attention to detail. As representatives of Sheridan and their respective programs, Peer Mentors will be expected to demonstrate the same leadership, professionalism, and role modelling in all aspects of their education, including during their own classes, during interactions with all students and Professors, and during any academic activities
Note: Students must be enrolled in Police Foundations to apply.
Students who are selected as Peer Mentors will have demonstrated a high level of student leadership and academic achievement within the Police Foundations Program and thus can serve as effective role models for first year students enrolled in the program. Peer Mentors will show a strong commitment to helping new students make the transition to Sheridan along with being part of a team of Peer Mentors.
