Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Services, the Medical Dicta Typist exercises judgment and independence to provide administrative support services to laboratory management, pathology physicians and staff, including:

• Transcribe surgical pathology reports from transcription software onto word processors
• Print and distribute reports
• Prepare daily surgical pathology reports
• Prepare histology samples for send out
• Cross-reference, sort and file reports on a monthly basis
• Establish and maintain department filing systems
• Answer telephones, take messages and transfer calls
• Prepare requisitions for out-patient blood work
• Provide Laboratory reception duties
• Comply with safe working practices and participate in ensuring that the work environment is safe.


• College degree/diploma in Business or Administration or related studies required
• Minimum two (2) years administrative experience in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
• Exemplary interpersonal, communication skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders
• Professional demeanor with demonstrated ability to work with confidential and sensitive organizational information and deal with issues and individuals with tact and diplomacy
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively under pressure, self-directed to achieve results
• Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills to make recommendations and resolve issues
• Excellent organizational, initiative, and follow up skills
• Computer proficiency in MS Office, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Keyboarding 50 wpm or greater and 95% accuracy required
• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN’s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
• Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
• Excellent work performance and attendance
