The Early Learning Centre

The Ryerson Early Learning Centre (ELC) is the School of Early Childhood Studies’ licensed laboratory early learning and child care centre. The ELC is a full-day child care and early learning program for 65 children from ages eighteen months to five years.

The Opportunity

While in compliance with Ryerson’s policies and procedures, the ministry of education CCEYA, 2018 and all public health and city of Toronto children services expectations, the RECE will: 

  • Develop and implement a program that supports and promotes the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children and meets the needs of the Child Care and Early Year’s Act (2018) and City of Toronto Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI)
  • Lead activities and provide an environment that supports inquiry and scaffolding of the children’s interests
  • Provide opportunities for the children to express themselves creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children
  • Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or next steps with the family and other staff. Implement individual program plans as guided by the Manager
  • Observe children and prepare reports/ documentation for the family, guardians and supervisor
  • Guide and assist children in the development of daily living skills
  • Collaborate with co-workers and community service providers to support the needs of the children and families
  • Maintain a clean and organized space. Use professional and responsive communication with staff members to promote a positive partnership
  • Understand the College of ECE Code of Ethics and standards of Practice and apply them to day to day interactions and performance
  • Record notes and important information related to children’s well-being in the communication book (ie. illness, accident reports, etc.)
  • Read and remain in compliance of all centre policies and procedures

Employment requirements

Early childhood educators (RECE)

  • Completion of a two year college diploma in early childhood education or A bachelor’s degree in child development or equivalent.
  • Registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators and in good standing.
  • Completion of CPR and First Aid Training Level C
  • Up to date medical records and immunizations, including TB test
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Reference Check completed within 6 months of the date of hire

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities (Competencies)

  • Strong communication skills
  • General understanding of child care obligations through the City of Toronto, Public Health and the Ministry of Education
  • Knowledge of Ontario curriculum documents (HDLH, ELECT, etc)
  • Sensitivity
  • Physical stamina
  • Patience
  • Leadership skills
