OCAD University is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative graduate student who is currently enrolled in OCAD University with knowledge of and interest in data visualization including a focus on GIS (Global Information Systems), 3D modeling and urban design, transportation and sustainability. They will participate as a research intern for the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium ( CUTRIC) in partnership with OCAD University’s Visual Analytics Laboratory as a Mitacs intern.
The adoption and integration of electric buses (eBus) will have positive impacts on the efficiency of transportation services, on energy consumption and related environmental benefits as well as costs. Electric buses (e-buses) have zero tailpipe emissions and lower operational costs, can help cities address local noise and air quality issues, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions when the grid is clean enough. However, the process of transitioning to electric transportation poses many significant challenges that must be addressed through careful planning and coordination. We will research and implement innovative Visual Analytics systems that can support electric bus (eBus) implementation in Canada. Visualizations can track multiple data sources with which to measure the process of adoption, provide tools for monitoring of services, and highlight impacts. This research underscores the necessity of user centered design methods, in which domain users are part of defining the requirements for tools. The intern will work closely with OCAD University Principal Investigators, Dr. Sara Diamond and Jeremy Bowes and CUTRIC OCAD U Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr. Greice Mariano, as well as with the CUTRIC research and administration team. Dr. Mariano and the Graduate Research intern will work in close and continual collaboration with CUTRIC members, and Research Project Manager Dr. Eshaan Ghosh through site visits (when safety permits), video and teleconferences. This will account for 50% of their time. The intern will also be a member of the Visual Analytics Laboratory at OCAD University.
- Participation in overview meetings regarding project objectives, design scrums and charrettes to understand user needs and attend planning or project-specific meetings as required
- Assist with the preparation of prototype proposals, progress and reports
- Participate in the testing and development of a comparative study of 3D visualization techniques that can be used to represent spatio-temporal data in the context of eBus project.
- Create prototypes for visualizations for spatio-temporal data integrating the different data present in the study of eBus. Deploy ESRI’s ArcGIS, and other mapping, 3D and visualization software to create visualizations
- Design a user centered dashboard integrating 2D and 3D visualizations by exploring design practices and HCI principles to propose a user centered dashboard design.
- Help to shape user centered sessions and then usability engagement with the CUTRIC team, including for design validation and usability testing.
- Participate in literature reviews, documentation and then writing up and publishing scientific contributions to the state of the art in creating visualization techniques and visual analytics methods for (i) spatio-temporal data, and (ii) transportation research.
- Must currently be enrolled in an OCAD U graduate program
- Experience with some of the following technologies: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), ESRI operations dashboard, ArcGIS Pro and the ESRI suite of tools for visual analytics and visualization.

- Excellent reading and writing skills
- Applicant to have an interest in urban planning, transportation, information design and visualization.
About the Visual Analytics Lab (VAL)
The Visual Analytics Lab (VAL) at OCAD U is focused on innovation and training in information, and scientific visualizations and visual analytics. Driven by the increasing complexity of data sets and the need for visualization of both data and information the VAL’s team of researchers, designers, artists, cultural theorists, graphics specialists and software developers, invent new visual metaphors, create analysis algorithms, deliver prototypes and research outcomes that strive to make complex data meaningful by skillful visual designs, compelling interaction, sound analytic methods, and solid engineering. The VAL collaborates with local experts, international and industry partners with projects that span urban and transportation issues, financial and health care services, publishing, social media and the entertainment sector.
Compensation & Hours of Work: The opportunity can be a full time (35 hours per week), twelve-month internship, with a gross total compensation of $10,000 over a 4 month period (or prorated for minimum 20 hour per week commitment). The internship will begin July 13th or when it is filled. Please note, this appointment is conditional on the funding of OCAD U’s external partners.
Work Environment: Currently research occurs through remote interaction. When face to face activities occur these will be at CUTRIC, 1 Yonge St Suite 1801, Toronto, ON M5E 1W7, and the Visual Analytics Lab, 205 Richmond St W, 7th floor, Toronto.
