Thisis a summer positionin Hamilton Conservation Authority’s (HCA) Watershed Planning and Engineering Department.This position reports to HCA Water Resources Engineering, and is under the 2020Canada Summer Jobs program.

Responsibilitiesinclude surface water quality sampling and equipment maintenance, assistance withthe maintenance of stream and rain gauge equipment, groundwater monitoring, andassociated data processing and management. 

Duties

  • Surface Water Quality Sampling and Equipment Maintenance
    • Assistance in surface water sampling, and equipment maintenance, for the HCA / Provincial Surface Water Quality Monitoring programs
    • Assistance in data collection, data processing and management
    • Assistance in surface water quality analysis (as required)
  • Maintenanceof Stream and Rain Gauge Equipment
    • Assistancein the maintenance of HCA precipitation and flow stations, as well as Christieand Valens Dam water levels gauges
    • Assistancein data collection, data processing and management
    • Assistancein flow, precipitation and level analysis (as required)
  • Groundwater Monitoring
    • Assistance in maintenance of HCA / Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network
    • Assistance in data collection, data processing and management
  • Data Management
    • Assistancein Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of existing data related toflow, level, precipitation, surface water quality, and groundwater (preferablyusing HCA’s WISKI database system).
    • Ongoingdata entry
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Education – Current University / College student with focus on water resources, engineering
  • Experience in water resources and environmental engineering, particularly water quality sampling, rain and flow monitoring, and corresponding data processing and analysis
  • Good communication skills
  • Some flexibility as to pattern of work hours
  • Knowledge of environmental and natural resources relative to local, watershed and provincial levels
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Valid driver’s license (G license minimum), as this is a requirement.

Working Conditions

The Water ResourcesTechnician (Summer Student Position) will be based at the Hamilton ConservationAuthority’s main office, 838 Mineral Springs Rd, Ancaster, Ontario.  However, some time will be spent in the fieldon HCA-owned lands and other properties. Working hours will total 37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive,with the possible additional requirement of evening meetings and occasionalwork on weekends. 

Work Term and Rate of Pay

This is a 4-monthcasual student position with an anticipated starting date of May 4, 2020.  Therate of pay level is $15.00 per hour.
