Durham College is seeking a proven leader with excellent organizational, administrative and academic skills to join a team of dynamic professionals dedicated to promoting student success and providing innovative, market-driven programs. Reporting to the Executive Dean, School of Science & Engineering Technology this outstanding communicator and skilled problem solver will provide guidance and support to students and employees in order to promote the success of all involved. The successful candidate will reflect Durham College’s mission and values and will bring to this position a track record of consultation and respect for all colleagues. The Associate Dean works in conjunction with the Executive Dean towards a strategic vision for the School. The successful candidate will assist in the development of programs and partnerships, lead faculty and staff of the School in the planning and securing of resources, implement and evaluate activities related to academic operations, and provide fiscal management and facility oversight. The Associate Dean represents the School both internally to the College and externally to the various stakeholders/partners. The Associate Dean also serves as part of the institution’s academic leadership team through active participation in various institutional planning, implementing and evaluating activities.

 

 

The Associate Dean will be responsible for:

  • Recruiting, selecting and managing performance of all contract faculty
  • Providing orientation and mentoring for contract faculty
  • Participating in the recruitment and selection of full-time faculty
  • Promoting effective and innovative instructional methods and encouraging the appropriate professional development for all faculty through collaboration with the College’s Centre for Academic and Faculty Enrichment (CAFE)
  • Supporting the Executive Dean in providing leadership for program growth and development through evaluation of existing courses and curriculum, revision or development of new courses and programs, and participation in program advisory meetings, program reviews, program accreditation and pathways initiatives
  • Assisting in the identification of detailed program needs including required specialized space, necessary equipment and equipment upgrades, classroom/office renovations, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Dean, forecasting student enrolment numbers for all School programs for budgeting and recruitment purposes
  • Supporting the Executive Dean to identify, negotiate and oversee academic articulation agreements with other institutions
  • Participating in the implementation of initiatives established by the College and government authorities as they relate to the School’s academic enterprise including quality plans, PLAR, General Education, Essential Employability Skills and the Minister’s Binding Policy Directives on Programs of Study
  • Supporting School scheduling and timetable development
  • Overseeing the School’s student academic advisement function
  • Managing the preparation and dissemination of necessary School-wide communications
  • Responsible for participating in the School’s informal and formal academic appeals process as outlined by College policy
  • Determining, conducting and documenting all disciplinary action when necessary in accordance with college policies and collective agreements
  • Contributing to the College’s overall planning and development including priorities identified in the Academic Plan through active involvement in a variety of committees, and sub-committees

 

 

The incumbent will possess a Master’s degree in a relevant field and at least one credential that is related to the programs offered in the School of Science & Engineering Technology (PhD is an asset) with a minimum of seven years of leadership experience in an academic setting. The incumbent will have general expertise with science and/or engineering disciplines and at least two years teaching in a college environment. The successful candidate will have leadership, administrative and project management skills with proven capacity to handle tremendous detail. The incumbent will possess exceptional communication, problem solving and decision making skills, excellent time management and organization skills, and will be competent at setting goals and achieving objectives. The successful candidate will display the ability to cope with a demanding workload, to remain calm and focused while under pressure, and will be able to deal with a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs. The incumbent will have skills in conflict resolution and be an advocate for staff, students, programs and the College as a whole.

 

In addition to having a clear understanding of postsecondary program delivery, curriculum development and curriculum revision, the individual will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team to facilitate strategic growth and quality teaching.
