Summary of Functions
Reporting to the Invasive Species Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of invasive species monitoring and management projects related to the delivery of CVC’s Invasive Species Program including mitigation measures related to Emerald Ash Borer. This position is based out of the Warwick Conservation Area in Caledon.
- Post-secondary education specializing in botany, biology, ecology, environmental science, or natural resource management.
- 2 years of relevant work experience in ecological field work and restoration.
- Field work experience is mandatory with the ability to work under inclement conditions (i.e. bugs and weather).
- Experience with supervising seasonal staff.
- Experience and knowledge of the issues and impacts of invasive species on natural systems in Ontario.
- Experience and knowledge of the ecology and control of invasive species.
- Knowledge and experience with various restoration activities and methods.
- Knowledge of restoration effectiveness monitoring sampling methodologies.
- Experience with navigation using orthophotos and/or GPS enabled tablet devices.
- Proficiency with native plant species identification, including knowledge of non-native invasive species and forest pests and diseases.
- A background and understanding of the principles of ecology and natural resource management in Ontario.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Proven research, analytic and report writing skills.
- Data entry and preparation of draft reports.
- Ability to work well independently, to take a leadership role when necessary, and to think creatively in tackling obstacles and developing solutions.
- Proven experience with the safe operation of farm implements, mechanical reforestation planters, tank sprayers, pesticide application, ATV’s, and landscape maintenance equipment.
- Proven experience with the safe hauling, loading, and unloading of trucks and trailers.
- Strong computer skills including MS Word, Access, Excel, and ArcView 3.3.
- Pesticide Applicators License with Landscape, Forestry or Aquatic certifications an asset.
- Valid Class “G” Ontario driver’s license. The successful applicant will be required to provide a MTO Driver’s Abstract.
Summary of Major TasksPerform the following tasks under direction:
- Under supervision of the Senior Coordinator, Invasive Species Management, assist with leading the invasive species crew and volunteers to implement invasive species management and restoration projects on both CVC and public land properties, including targeted invasive control in ash removal zones due to EAB.
- Assist with TreeAzin injections to ash trees.
- Supervision of seasonal staff in field. This includes ensuring staff are following health and safety procedures and ensuring invasive species management tasks are carried out in a professional and timely manner.
- Operation of mechanical equipment including tractors, trimmers, ATVs, water pumps, loading and towing trailers.
- Use basic construction and field techniques to plant trees and herbaceous plants, and build habitat structures in support of other terrestrial restoration projects.
- In partnership with Watershed Transformation staff, work with and coordinate volunteers, NGO’s, and other CVC departments to implement projects.
- Assist with coordinating efforts to organize community groups, general public and partners in the removal of invasive plant species and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems.
- Assist with the implementation of workshops in aid of program goal’s for both internal staff and external partners and volunteers.
- Attend and support workshops and man displays at relevant events as required.
- Conduct research and literature review as necessary.
- Conduct biological site assessments, monitoring, and inventories to support invasive species management projects and priorities development.
- Manage photo monitoring of invasive species control projects and ash removal due to EAB.
- Compile and analyze field data and enter into appropriate databases. Prepare draft reports as directed.
- Conduct work in a safe manner, ensuring that all CVC health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Some after hours or weekend work may be required.
- Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
Additional InformationAnticipated Start and End Dates: September 9, 2020 – December 31, 2020 (35 hours/week) Possibility of an 8 month extension
