Title Vice President, Student Success
Competition Number 19-A-32
Position Summary
A visionary, innovative leader with a focus on student and community engagement will welcome this opportunity to champion student success at every level by creating the best possible conditions for students to thrive.
Through Centennial College’s vision of transforming lives and communities through learning, the Executive Team guides the College’s efforts in preparing people to excel in their careers and the ever-changing world they face. Through exemplary teaching and innovative programming that emphasize new skills and blurs the line between work and learning, Centennial students graduate as global citizens aware of social justice and equity issues, capable of contributing anywhere in the world.
Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President, Student Success is a vital member of the Executive Team and, as such, provides professional counsel to the President and CEO, and shares significant institutional authority and responsibility with colleagues in shaping strategic directions, operations and other planning needs related to the health, viability and success of the College.
From the moment Centennial reaches out and engages learners, to the point its graduates enter the workforce, the focus of the College is on the access, progression, retention and success of the most important people within its post-secondary context: its students. Subsequently, as Vice President, Student Success, you’ll need to be, first and foremost, a caring, engaging, transformative, relational, facilitative, evidence-based, innovative and adaptable leader, with a history of creating the best possible conditions for students to thrive and a passion for Centennial’s vision of transforming lives and communities through learning.
You will ensure full support for college-wide implementation of the College’s strategic plan (Third Book of Commitments), through a laser-focused student-centred approach. By fostering a climate of learning, inquiry and engagement across diverse departments and disciplines, you will champion major transformative corporate initiatives, policies and programs to create positive change. As the Chief Student Affairs Officer, you will be directly accountable for strategic directions, operations, and business planning. In this capacity, you’ll provide critical leadership for senior management relating to student and community engagement across five major campuses and three learning sites.
Drawing on research supported by best practices and evidence, you will assist the President and CEO in advising the Board of Governors on College issues which relate to serving the needs of all students, including students with disabilities and other populations who require targeted approaches to equalizing the playing field for success such as: youth from underserved neighbourhoods, Indigenous persons, women interested in non-traditional careers, and individuals who would not have participated or succeeded in post-secondary education without intervention and supports. You will ensure strategies designed for program and service delivery are flexible, meet current needs and future demands and reflect student-centered/student engagement models, relevant student/client service models, and policies/practices that reflect diversity and promote equity and inclusion. In addition, you will employ Strategic Enrolment Management metrics related to recruitment and admissions, persistence and retention and graduate employment, to enhance student outcomes.
Proactive, engaging, relational, facilitative and innovative, you will champion and support an inclusive learning environment that is student-centred and leverages the engagement of all staff around commitment to the vision of the institution. Leading the design and implementation of innovative processes, structures and reporting frameworks, you’ll work closely with senior leadership from across the College to advance evidence-informed decision-making and a culture of performance, accountability and student success.
This mandate calls for a seasoned, collaborative and respected professional who has at least 15 years of progressively responsible management and senior leadership experience, with demonstrated success leading, strategizing, visioning, executing and evaluating within a complex, dynamic, unionized environment. Your track record of accomplishments is supported by a master’s degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of experience, training and education.
With a broad spectrum of experience and leadership in the education sector, you have successfully delivered effective, focused services, initiatives and programs on a large-scale and demonstrated ability to create a learner-centred environment to support students’ needs, career aspirations and personal wellbeing. A confident, persuasive communicator, you will have also demonstrated superb skills in dealing with all levels of an organization and experience in addressing a broad array of issues – from human resources, diversity and equity issues, to finance, corporate communications, fundraising and event planning.

Centennial College and its Board of Governors value and embrace diversity, equity and inclusion as fundamental to our mission to educate students for career success within a context of global citizenship and social justice.
We recognize that historical and persistent inequities and barriers to equitable participation exist and are well documented in society and within the college.
We believe individual and systemic biases contribute to the marginalization of designated groups. These biases include race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, ancestry, nationality, place of origin, colour, ethnicity, culture, linguistic origin, citizenship, creed (religion, faith), marital status, socio-economic class, family status, receipt of public assistance or record of offence.
We acknowledge that resolving First Nations sovereignty issues is fundamental to pursuing equity and social justice within Canada. We acknowledge the richness and diversity of the community we serve. As our community has evolved, and our staff and student population have changed, we have implemented policies and practices to address issues of inclusion. In moving forward, we will build on this work to embed commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in every aspect of what we do.
We are committed to providing persons with disabilities equal opportunities regarding all employment activities, including access to jobs and accommodations during employment as required, in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
