Business Development
Centennial College is immediately hiring a Sr. Strategic Data Analyst with a strong foundation in data science and predictive modelling. The Analyst will work independently to build statistical algorithms; develop data models; track, test for accuracy and reliability; as well effectively summarize statistical/algorithmic findings to draw business conclusions, and present actionable insights. The incumbent will support the delivery of cost-effective intelligent automation and promote strategic business decisions to drive innovation and best practices for future data and AI endeavours for the college.
Reporting to the Project Manager, Business Development and the Manager, Institutional Research, the incumbent will support key projects by understanding and extracting data from internal business stakeholders (Information Technology and Institutional Research) to solve critical data problems, and mentor other data analysts on the team.
  • Provide centralized support to various data science and predictive analytics initiatives through the development of standardized frameworks, processes, measures, templates, tools, and checklists
  • Support the development of tools and methodologies to deliver effective training for data analytics and AI to college personnel
  • Apply expertise in addressing distinctive and/or ambiguous situations
  • Provide advice, guidance, and training to specific business units with respect to the implementation of analytical solutions in their areas
  • Develop/modify existing models, processes, and associated templates for planning and control to ensure their flexibility and dynamism in accommodating the intricacies of projects within different areas/departments
  • Coordinate and promote networks for knowledge transfer to facilitate improvements in the process of organizational memory retention, sustainability, and reflective practice
  • Identify emerging issues and trends within the fields of data science and predictive analytics to inform decision-making at an institutional and departmental level
  • Engage in fundamental and comprehensive research to develop novel solutions, in accordance with emerging themes and trends in the literature/industry practice
  • Structure/clarify unclear business problems and determine the appropriate statistical methodologies and techniques based to design solutions
  • Thoroughly document data workflows, system functionality, and processes related to the collection and clean-up of data to improve the efficiency
  • Diagnose and determine solutions for predictive and analytical model performance issues identified through system monitoring
  • Maintain and re-engineer KPIs and various reports, including any data cleansing and manipulation that may be necessary when working with multiple disparate data sources
  • Apply scripting and/or programming skills to varying types of source data (unstructured or structured) into datasets, which often have several tiers of granularities (i.e. demographics, transactions, etc.)
  • Summarize statistical findings in order to draw reliable and accurate conclusions; presents actionable institutional and business recommendations
  • Develop action plans and task assignments with respect to data science and predictive analytics
  • Ensure team members remain up-to-date with relevant knowledge and skills, and offer training opportunities to aid in the process
  • Other duties as required
  • Master’s degree required in the field of: STEM, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, or related scientific or quantitative disciplines and/or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience (e.g. PhD, relevant certifications, etc.)
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in statistical modelling, machine learning, data mining, unstructured data analytics in corporate and/or academic research-driven environments
  • Background in basic statistics (i.e. descriptive statistics, parametric tests, regression, univariate and bivariate testing, etc.)
  • Ability to read, analyse, and make interpretations from datasets
  • Identifying relationships/correlations between variables
  • Proficient with statistical tools/languages (e.g. R, S-plus, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Python, C, C++, Java, Scala) and machine learning/deep learning algorithms/packages (i.e. XGBoost, H2O, SparkML)
  • Strong scripting and programming skills with proficiency using query languages such as SQL; familiar with relational databases
  • Proven expert with one of the following: Reliability models, Markov Models, Stochastic Models, Bayesian Modelling, Classification Models, Cluster Analysis, Neural Network, Non-Parametric Methods, Multivariate Statistics
  • In-depth experience using machine learning techniques and algorithms
  • Experience with distributed computing language (i.e. Hive /Hadoop/ Spark) & cloud technologies (i.e. AWS Sagemaker, AzureML)
  • Proven experience working with recent versions of the Microsoft Office software suite, digital document management systems (DMS), project portfolio management software (i.e. Eclipse), and Adobe software
  • Experience with project management processes and methodology
  • Demonstrated strategic and creative thinking skills
  • Highly developed analytical and critical thinking ability
  • Works well independently in a team oriented, highly diverse work environment
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence with the ability to handle politically sensitive, confidential and delicate situations with respect and diplomacy
  • Experience providing updates, guidance and training to managers and stakeholders
