Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Services (ARIES)

 

Centennial College is an award-winning leader among Canadian colleges for Applied Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. Centennial is also the recipient of four national Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) awards for applied research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

 

In keeping with Centennial’s strategic plan to Drive Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we are immediately seeking a transformational Executive Director, to lead a high performing team to drive and implement strategies that will continue to fulfill the college’s vision of Transforming lives and communities through learning. Reporting to the AVP, Research and Corporate Planning, the successful incumbent will oversee three institutional portfolios operating across multiple college campuses:

(i) Applied Research and Innovation Centre (ARIC),

(ii) Centre of Entrepreneurship (COE), including the youth startup accelerator (ACCEL), and the recently awarded

(iii) Wearable, Interactive, and Mobile Technologies Access Centre for Health (WIMTACH). Each centre has one or more advisory boards/committees guiding its activities while offering or facilitating multiple programs and services related to ARIES both inside and outside the college community.

 

The Executive Director will be accountable for overseeing programs and services in complex multi-stakeholder partnerships (faculty, staff, students, community, industry, business partners/clients) with engagement with public and private sectors from ideation to delivery and impact.

Responsibilities

Strategic and Operational mandate:

  • Co-lead the vision, strategy and operations to bring our commitment to drive innovation and entrepreneurship to life 
  • Oversee multi-year, multi-disciplinary applied research and innovation programs and centres, and research chairs
  • Lead, develop and deliver on new and emerging entrepreneurial initiatives, while sustaining, improving and growing existing initiative
  • Engage and cultivate strategic partnerships with internal and external partners from industry, public, private, not-for-profit sectors and institutions to develop new, bold and a shared vision for future applied research, innovation and entrepreneurship at and through the college
  • Co-create multi-year strategic plans for ARIES aligned with federal and provincial priorities that integrates the college’s Strategic Mandate Agreement, Our Book of Commitments, and Academic Plan
  • Advocate for capacity building and excellence that attracts top performers and partners to engage with the college in ARIES
  • Manage a team and oversee the day-to-day operations including human resources functions (hiring, coaching, consulting, performance management, administration)
  • Lead, present and participate on committees, advisory boards, expert panels, workshops, seminars, trade shows and conferences at the national, provincial, or international level to enhance Centennial’s brand reputation and further strategic goals as institutional leader

  • Facilitate experimental learning and employment opportunities for students, teaching and learning innovation and curriculum renewal for faculty and staff, and new or improved technology, product, service, process and talent acquisition for industry and community partners
  • Accountable for and oversee ARIES total fiscal performance including capital and operational budgets as well as the Centennial Fellowship program funded by the college
  • Manage grants and contracts, including approving legal templates addressing specialized research and innovation projects and programs (i.e. consortia models)
  • Provide administrative decisions and referrals to the Research Ethics Board, and act as an expert resource for senior management
  • Work with academic managers to enhance the teaching and learning environment at Centennial by the integration of applied research into academic activities (i.e. embedding new essential skills and growing curricular research projects)
  • Collaborate with internal departments (Marketing and Communications, Information Technology, etc.) to build brand initiatives and enhance best practices
  • Contribute to the College’s body of knowledge by publishing briefings and reports
  • Demonstrate the core values of the organization in all interactions with employees, internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications
  • A PhD or equivalent graduate education (e.g., two Masters Degrees) with preference to specialization in Engineering, Sciences or Business or related discipline
  • Minimum 12 years of progressive experience within the field of applied research and scholarship, innovation and entrepreneurship, within an academic and business environment
  • Extensive experience in research proposal development, design, policy development and evaluative design technologies
  • A solid understanding of applied research, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship issues in both the private and public sectors
  • Proven strategic planning and operational leadership skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Proven track record in business development, identifying and implementing new growth opportunities, writing and securing funding and grants
  • Advanced writing skills are essential and published work is a definite asset
  • Experience managing a high performing entrepreneurial team including human resources activities (hiring, mentoring, performance management, administration)
  • Well networked among thought leaders, key national and international peer organizations
  • Strong business, financial and political acumen
  • Proven project leadership experience, leading complex projects from inception to completion
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to travel regularly within Canada and occasional international
