Reporting to the District Supervisor, Roads Maintenance, is responsible for acting as a working member of a road maintenance crew with the added responsibility of providing guidance and technical on-the-job leadership to internal and contracted crew members carrying out road maintenance related tasks; also responsible for assigning, scheduling and checking the work of assigned staff and ensuring a safe working environment; handling service requests and work orders related to all maintenance work using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping; assisting with developing daily, weekly and monthly work schedules; and the inspection of the Regional road system and initiation of operational response in compliance with maintenance standards and the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
•Successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent approved combination of education and experience.
•Minimum three (3) years demonstrated experience in road maintenance related activities.
•Demonstrated experience in the field of specialized heavy duty equipment and other equipment associated with road maintenance operations, such as dump trucks, loaders, tractors, chainsaws and grass cutting equipment.
•Valid Ontario Class “DZ” driver’s licence free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
•Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and standards, including the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
•Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including communication, innovation, teamwork and collaboration, and personal ownership.
•Leadership skills and ability to provide guidance, training and mentoring, ensure a safe working environment and to coordinate, assign, schedule, provide clear written and verbal instructions and check the work of assigned staff.
•Knowledge of Regional road maintenance operational quality and quantity standards related to work place activities.
•Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications and ability to input operational data.
•Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
•Familiarity with GIS applications, asset management and GIS asset tagging/selecting.
•Written communication skills necessary to complete technical and work performance related reports, forms and diaries.
•Ability to display initiative in response to on-site and emergency conditions to provide a safe and efficient road system and minimize conflict with the travelling public.
•Ability to implement operational work methods to ensure effective and efficient utilization of resources to meet appropriate operational work standards.
•Ability to interpret and implement Regional road design contract drawings.
•Ability to work rotating shifts.
•Availability and ability to perform standby duties as required in accordance with Branch policy and to respond to emergency situations.
•Ability to perform heavy manual labourer work in potentially adverse weather conditions.
•Ability to work outside regular business hours as required.
