|Position Overview||Reporting to the Chair, Community Services in the Faculty of Applied Arts and Health Sciences, the Professor will be responsible for providing academic leadership in the classroom and within the School of Community Services, ensuring an effective and compelling learning environment for students. |
As a part of Seneca’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action, this position will be aligned to assist the College in contributing to Education for Reconciliation and more specifically addressing the need to integrate Indigenous knowledge into the curriculum and classrooms.
The Professor will teach topics that cover Case Coordination and Advocacy, Families in Change and Human Development, Partner Abuse and Violence and Integrative Field Seminar.
|Responsibilities||Under the direction of the senior academic officer of the College or designate, the Professor is responsible for:|
•Ensuring student awareness of course objectives, approach and evaluation techniques.
•Carrying out regularly scheduled instruction, which may include tutoring and academic counselling of students.
•Providing a learning environment, which makes effective use of available resources, work experience and field trips.
•Evaluating student progress/achievement and assuming responsibility for the overall assessment of the student’s work within assigned courses.
•Creating an effective environment for applied learning, which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences, and learning styles.
Course and Curriculum Development:
•Consulting with program and course directors and other faculty members, advisory committees, accrediting agencies, potential employers and students.
•Defining course objectives, and evaluating and validating these objectives.
•Specifying or approving learning approaches, necessary resources, etc.
•Developing individualized instruction and multi-media presentations where applicable.
•Selecting or approving textbooks and learning materials.
•Updating courses to include trauma informed practice and FNMI content.
•Providing guidance to Instructors relative to the Instructors’ teaching assignments.
•Participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees as requested.
•Involvement with collaborative projects.
|Qualifications||The successful candidate must be of FNMI (First Nations, Metis, Intuit) descent and be actively and meaningfully connected to an indigenous community. Upon application, candidates will be provided an opportunity to meet with the Associate Dean, Student Services and Indigenous Education. |
•A minimum of a completed Master’s Degree in Social Work; preference will be given to applicants with a completed Ph.D.
•Membership with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
•A minimum of two (2) years’ post-secondary teaching experience which includes experience ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant and reflective of best practices.
•Experience defining, evaluating and validating learning outcomes for courses.
•Experience designing appropriate strategies and tools to assess student performance that are consistent with the learning outcomes of the course and address multiple learning styles.
•A minimum of five (5) years’ professional experience working in a leadership role within a non-profit sector where counselling and advocacy work with marginalized populations is a prime function.
•Excellent presentation, communication and human relation skills are essential to interact effectively with the College’s multi-cultural/racial/able student and staff population, as is an understanding of and commitment to equity in education.
•Ability to convey the conceptual and practical aspects of curriculum to students, while respecting their diverse backgrounds, experience and individual learning styles is necessary.
•Ability to develop multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies and incorporate appropriate educational technologies into the applied learning process.
•Must be able to work independently and with other faculty to develop and deliver curriculum and contribute positively to the team environment.
•Demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, motivation and a willingness to innovate and apply new teaching techniques and technologies are also required.
•Ability to contribute to opportunities to build interdisciplinary partnerships.
•Demonstrated ability to teach indigenous content to both indigenous and non- indigenous students.
•Demonstrated ability to work from a trauma informed and anti-oppressive lens.
