Reporting to the Dean, the Academic Chair (Chair) is responsible for providing academic leadership and management to a school or multiple schools within the Faculty. The incumbent works as part of the administrative leadership team in the development and implementation of the schools’ strategic initiatives that are aligned to and aimed at achieving the college’s long term objectives (Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA), Academic and Business Plans) while ensuring quality program delivery and student success and achievement are at the forefront of decision making.
Specifically, the Chair is responsible for providing academic leadership in all areas of the school(s) operation including: quality program development and delivery, fiscal, financial and human resource management, project leadership, research and innovation, student-related supports and any college-wide initiatives that involve staff, faculty and students from the incumbent’s school(s) and have an impact on the achievement of School(s), Faculty and College’s long term goals. The Chair also plays a lead role in the negotiation of academic partnerships and pathways, including those with international academic institutions, that serve to support further study for students and graduates.
The Chair is accountable for the quality delivery of all programs within the school and leads his/her team in the development and continuous improvement of a strong school identity, a positive reputation and a clear mandate and direction through the achievement of shared educational objectives that are current and relevant to students’ needs and workplace expectations. The Chair is also accountable for ensuring their programs meet external accreditation and/or regulatory requirements where they exist.
In all areas within their portfolio, the Chair ensures that their team is responsive to Seneca’s mission, vision and values, while achieving the expectations defined within the Faculty and School(s). As a member of the Faculty administrative team, the Chair works closely on the development and implementation of annual and longer-term academic and operational plans, and leads their team to ensure that activities address both immediate and future priorities of the program(s), Faculty and College.
The Chair is also accountable for leading, designing, and managing change leadership strategies for all key initiatives impacting their School(s). This involves supporting major initiatives originating within their school(s) as well as the Seneca-wide undertakings that must be interpreted and adapted to their unique school requirements. The Chair will develop and maintain strong working relationships across other Faculties and work collaboratively with colleagues from other academic divisions (i.e.: Learning Services, Applied Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (ARIE), Student Services, etc.,), non-academic divisions (i.e.: Recruitment, Finance, Facilities, HR, etc.,) as well as industry/community partners, professional and international associations.
