Description of Duties:
Manages a team of Transportation Engineering professionals in the planning, design, and construction of road and bridge widening projects, new roads and bridges, and other transportation related engineering projects, or the rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing roads, bridges, and other transportation related engineering projects.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
•Advanced theoretical knowledge of engineering normally acquired through a degree in applied science with comprehensive knowledge and progressively responsible experience in traffic and transportation engineering and structural design, plus related experience in an engineering design and construction setting.
•Eligibility for membership in the Professional Engineers Ontario.
•Negotiation, analytical and problem solving skills to plan and develop objectives and determine goals for the Transportation Expansion Program or Transportation Rehabilitation Program requiring a practical knowledge of administrative, technical, operational and financial matters. Ability to organize and coordinate all projects, determine workload and assign staff to achieve goals and objectives.
•Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Lien Act, Environmental Protection and Environmental Assessment Act, Ontario Provincial Standards, Canadian Standards, Ministry of the Environment guidelines, Contract Law and other relevant legislation for the Transportation Expansion Program or Transportation Rehabilitation Program.
•Leadership, human relations and communication skills in order to manage, develop, motivate and support supervised professional staff in achieving short and long term objectives, and participate as an effective team member.
•Ability to travel to various locations within and outside Waterloo Region.
•Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
•Writes letters, reports, contracts, budgets and project descriptions for Design & Construction, Transportation, and Transportation Planning divisions, committees, Regional and area municipal councils, contractors and consultants, media and the public where applicable.
•Reads professional journals, reports, contracts, memos and other Transportation & Environmental Services correspondence.
•Prepares and conducts presentations at public and committee meetings, Council, interest groups and the media.
