School of Community and Health Studies
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Community and Health Studies, the Chair, Department of Child and Family Studies, provides academic and administrative leadership, supervision and direction to the faculty, managers, support staff and students in the Department of Child and Family Studies and SCHS Early Learning Centres. The Chair provides leadership in the planning, development and delivery of a related cluster of courses and programs (certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and continuing education programs) offered in both full-time and part-time formats by the School. The Chair is accountable for the planning, development, delivery and ongoing review including external program approval and licensing requirement processes of the full time post-secondary and post-diploma programs and services, ensuring that the programs are relevant to the needs of college, students, its employers, and the community at large and is consistent with the College’s and School’s strategic directions. The Chair provides administrative and supervisory oversight of the School’s Early Learning Centres and ancillary revenue operations. The Chair will drive integrated multidisciplinary program and project development linked to employer needs and the community as well as ensure collaboration, partnership, organizational effectiveness and communication for the Department of Child and Family Studies both within and outside of Centennial College. The Chair will develop and sustain partnerships (local, provincial, national and international) and establish a leadership position for the department, seeking out research/grant/funding opportunities to build an Institute which support children and families along the continuum (prenatal, infant, child, youth and families).
• Provides academic and administrative leadership to faculty, managers and support staff involved in the development and delivery of a related cluster of courses and programs offered by the Child and Family Studies department.
• Develops and directs the implementation of the strategic plans for the department’s programs that will complement and support the College’s Strategic Plan, Business Plan, Academic Plan and Framework and Diversity Plan and the School of Community and Health Studies Strategic Plans, strategic directions and Business Plan.
•Provides academic leadership in establishing/maintaining collaborative efforts with educational and sector-specific partnerships based on external community needs.
• Provides academic leadership to the teaching/learning process by ensuring that the objectives of the programs and courses offered are attained through effective collaboration with faculty and maintenance of close contact with business/industry, professional associations; program advisory committees; and other college and university educational partnership institutions.
• Identifies programs and directs and participates in the College’s program and curriculum review process for programs in the assigned portfolio.
• Seeks out research/grant and partnership opportunities and respond to RFPs from various sources in support of departmental programs and activities.
• Facilitates/writes grant and funding proposals in partnership with other departments/agencies where appropriate.
• Maintains a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting and by selecting, developing, motivating, evaluating and training faculty, managers and support staff within the department including Early Learning Centres.
• Provides input and monitors the budget activity for the Department of Child and Family Studies, seeking to understand variances apparent within the budget; makes adjustments to budget allocations dependent upon financial sustainability.
• Directs the operations of the School’s Early Learning Centres (3), providing oversight of human resources, financial, operations and licensing processes.
• Participates in program marketing efforts in co-ordination with the School’s and College’s marketing departments
• Collaborates with others to ensure the effective use of human, physical and financial resources for the programs/department, reallocating resources appropriately and as necessary based on the School and College priorities
• Masters’ degree in education or a child and family services related program (e.g., Masters in Early Childhood Studies, Child and Family Studies/Well-being, Child and Youth Studies). PhD a strong asset.
• Professional designation in Early Childhood Education (ECE) a strong asset.
• Minimum of 7 years industry related experience.
•Extensive management experience in a relevant field.
•Demonstrated ability to conduct, participate and promote scholarly activities including experience in research management, grant writing and application, and/or external partnership agreements.
• Proven ability to provide effective and positive academic and administrative leadership.
• Demonstrated success in creating a strategic vision and managing change within complex systems.
• Demonstrated competencies in effective teaching practice, curriculum development, interprofessional education/collaboration.
• Advanced problem solving and analytical skills
• Demonstrated understanding of e-learning, flexible modalities, UDL and usage of a wide variety of social media.
• Demonstrated skills in managing equity issues and working with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
• Demonstrated skills in financial stewardship (budget development and balancing operational budget priorities)
• Demonstrated knowledge in the development and implementation of effective strategic /academic/ business plans
• Experience, knowledge and understanding of working effectively in a diverse and unionized environment
